Pretty Funky! What Say Ye? Yay or Nay?

I got a small tutorial on textures today from my friend Tonya. (If I stay two steps behind her she does all the hard work in trying to figure this stuff out and then I can reap the spoils! ;) Thanks again for the help, T.))

I added some textures to the pictures I shot yesterday. Some are pretty funky and weird and I might not even like them tomorrow, but tonight I am under the influence of lots of ice cream with chocolate syrup and butterfinger crumble on top so some are a bit tripped out (My photographer friends might come and confiscate my photoshop after seeing these...). Anyway, I had some fun learning something new, and would like to know your thoughts. Do you like them better before or after the texture? (Look below to see the befores.)

This one you will either love or hate. This one is the one that might put me in a time-out from photoshop. What do you think?

If the last one is too weird- blame the ice cream!!

p.s. I do think the boys needed to be in hoodies with grills for some of these shots, or zip-up jumpsuits with grease stains. I will do a better job of consulting with Wardrobe before our next shoot!

I think I would like to see them in B&W before I send you to the time out chair. ;-)

...but 1 and 3 are not time out worthy!

play again when you get out of your corner...

I like 1 and 3 too! Number 2 kind of makes your husband looks like he has an old-fashioned dirty hobo beard (big brown spot on his cheek :) ). And the last one looks kind of like a sudden sand storm blew in! But what am I saying, I can't photoshop for the life of me, so overall I am totally impressed with your ability!!! And oh the things we do with ice cream in our systems!

I like #1. #2 makes Jaren look super dirty. But I'm with Jennifer P... I can't do much with my photoshop... so your mad skillz are impressive. And your photography skillz are even better.

p.s. Your blog's makeover is lovely.

I like some of them, but I agree with the others -- when Gunnar looks smooth and pure and Jaren has been "weatherized" it looks a bit off. The last one looks like the cover of a 1990s era junior high yearbook.

If I can't get you or Tonya to share your photoshop secrets I think I'm going to go insane! I'm going nuts just staring at your pictures! I want to do this too! Your photos are beautiful!

Kam,

I wouldn't just offer my opinion, but since you asked I'll tell you straight up that your photos without all of the bells and whistles are by far the winner in my view. I much prefer the clarity of your untouched, undefiled photos to those with texture. It's not that you didn't do a good job with the texture, but personally I think texture works best for graphical photos.

I find that often people use texture as a means to disguise or hide lack of talent or other mistakes....which I wouldn't openly criticize if I felt like that was what you were doing. However, I know you are just trying to master the tool and have the satisfaction of knowing if you wanted to use it you could. But girl, when a person can execute a photo as well as you I don't understand the need for all of the fluff. I'll willingly concede that I am not an expert, but for what my humble opinion is worth...there you have it.

Hi Kam, I agree with your friend Kimberly, the shots without texture are by far the best!! Photoshop can get a little trippy sometimes... My sister (an ex-druggie) has a WILD time with it... but I do love the mildly textured shots, it all depends on the look of the photo. My mom won 3rd place in Children's in the Idaho State Competition plus Judge's Choice Award for a shot she took of Rowan in the hospital and added some amazing photoshop textures/layers on top of it. It's amazing... I'll email you the link so you can see it... in fact, I'll cont. my longest comment in history in an email... love, your new BFF kristy.

I agree with Kristy and Kimberly. I liked a little texture, but not as much as was on Jaren's face. I first thought that he had had a really dirty day at work, or playing in the muc without G. What was on his face? I like the clarity of the photo taken on the rainey day with the wonderful red umbrella and giraffe(?) boots. Keep up the good/interesting work. XONB
